Proforma letter for fundraising

Here is a letter you can use as a template for fundraising. Sending letters like these to rotary clubs, local councils and MPs really does work in raising money. Try it!

Thanks to Dom for writing this letter, and Lian for sharing it.

Dear [sponsor],

Students at [university] are really excited about taking action
on climate change, recycling and forests, however we find that with
the high annual turnover of students, many new students lack the
skills, experience and especially the confidence to take action.
We are hoping to participate in training to support new students
overcome these barriers to taking local action on climate change &
other environmental issues.

We believe that
the best opportunity to help students be active on environmental
issues is to ‘handover’ the skills learnt by active students in
previous years. The best opportunity to do this is the at the annual
Students of Sustainability conference organised by A.S.E.N (the
Australian Student Environment Network) where experienced activists
share skills such as building collectives, fundraising, running
campaigns and more.

The training
camp takes place every year, this year in Adelaide, from the 4th
to the 8th of July. In the past students have found the
camp invaluable because of the skills and confidence gained from a
week of workshops and training situations. Further more the camp is
an important national event as it allows for national networking.
Especially in Perth it is important to network with environmental
students in other states so that we can receive support from more
experienced students when we need it.

The main barrier
for students attending the camp is the cost of travelling to Adelaide. That is why I am writing to you, to ask for funding
support. Travelling costs will be approximately [$number] per person and
the camp itself costs $150, which is an already subsidised price that
includes all food and accommodation for the week in Adelaide.

We hope to send [number] students to Adelaide to participate in the training. I am asking
you to fund half of the costs. This will cost you [$number] and will
provide [number] students with the skills necessary to organise, educate and
campaign on environmental issues in our community.
